No Test Without Integration

When we talk about Testing very often is referred to the domain of Software Testing; i.e. testing the functionality of the software under test. In High Tech systems development however, multiple disciplines are combined in order to create a working system, i.e. the combination of software, mechanics and electronics, to name a few, are required to deliver the desired system functionality. Therefore, testing of such systems is not only limited to testing the software but involves all other disciplines and system parts as well. To combine all these disciplines and system parts, a thorough and comprehensive integration process is required.
During this presentation I would like to dig a bit deeper into the complexities of Integration and its relation to Testing. Nowadays, approaches like continuous integration might give the impression that the integration itself is the last step before release but integration without test is in fact a cul-de-sac (i.e. a dead end street!) in your development life cycle. The process of Integration enables the Test, and that is where a tester should “hit the ground running”. A sound understanding of the meaning and importance of integration is therefore inevitable in order to develop and test High Tech and other systems.
We will have a profound look into what integration is and how a solid integration process can help the development process in order to obtain goals such as better quality and faster delivery.
